Throughout Lovely’s body of work, westies feature heavily enough to be their own collection but in this charismatic cacophony of Christmas and sentimental charm they take a second seat (literally). Like Lovely’s pieces featuring models on verandas simulating the childlike behavior of sitting “wrongly” in chair, here we see that escalated as only a true child subject can in festive red tights and carefree pose. The cameo here are the chairs originally from Newberry in Paris, reupholstered in Laura Ashley print, the story is they were once occupied by Picasso. All three figures are the artist’s family, her niece “doing what kids do,” and Mac and Hamilton (westies) decked for the holidays. “The scene reminded me,” says Lovely, “of Mary Cassatt, who not only often painted children and dogs, but specifically “painted a dog and a girl who couldn’t sit up in her chair either.”
