Painting - Paint Marker On Paper
Description
Part of a paint marker study-collection featuring two significant Nantucket emblems: hydrangeas in blues and a swath of “Nantucket Reds” creating the background’s tri-color progression of warm-to-cool diagonal layers. Nantucket Reds (a red khaki pant) are the unofficial uniform of summer in the Cape and Islands of New England, and a color you’ll find throughout Lovely’s work. The artist specifies this red reflects the stems of the rosa rugosa (a.k.a. the beach roses that garnish the coastal dunes) which you can see better “in early spring, when there are no leaves” and the stems are laid bare. In the base you’ll find a pile of scallop shells, also iconic island currency. The hydrangeas, naturally representative of foliage found throughout the northeast seaboard, are symbolic as a bloom that “multiplies (returns) every year,” as Lovely points out, “like much of Nantucket’s population.”
